Apple!

Due to the Memorial Holiday, I gave notice 3 weeks in advance, taking the week after JavaOne off for a vacation on "The Big Island" of Hawaii. The photo is a night time image of glowing lava I took with my Nikon D-50. There were three glowing spots and I was using a 300 MM zoom lens without a tripod which resulted in the squiggles.

The first week at Apple has been insanely great!

A Slideshow Podcast

I thought I'd try an experiment to see how useful I could make a podcast with screenshots. It turned out to be a reasonably good format for a demo, though you have to plan for a somewhat limited display area. I used Garage Band to build the mpeg 4 file. It even runs on my iPod Nano, but of course you generally can't see much on the Nano's tiny screen.

Roving Mars IMAX Movie

Highly recommended. Roving Mars does a good job capturing the project's engineering challenges.

Also, take a look at the NASA site. The panoramic pictures in the press releases section are amazing.

It looked like everyone in the JPL mission control center had Sun desktop workstations. Sun is fairly dominant in the "scientific computing" space. It's all about rock solid Fortran libraries for numeric computation.

Publications

Update (1/25),
The Ajax articles I wrote with Beth Stearns are now online as part of our release of a major update.

Here is a recent article published on the portal for our product.

The article details the use of a 3rd party component within the Creator IDE.

This article served to address functional limitations in the component sets provided with early versions of Creator. The work also helped create synergy between two companies and their respective customers.

The leader of our content team mentioned that weblog analysis showed this was one of the top articles for pulling new traffic into our site. She's been asking for an encore and now that our release is headed out the door I will aim to please.
